The wedding industry is one in which opulence seemingly has no upper limit, and the nuptial celebrations of many very high net worth couples have – especially in recent years – reached heights of show-stopping extravagance that have reframed the definition of a luxury wedding forevermore. Simply put, in many cases, these weddings are getting bigger at an unprecedented rate, and the industry that surrounds these events never ceases to amaze in its ability to continually push the boundaries of what is possible, for the right price.
There was a telling moment just a couple of weeks ago: Taylor Swift – whose current net worth is estimated at an astonishing $1.6 billion – was asked by Graham Norton on his BBC chat show about when her much-anticipated wedding was going to be. Her answer? “You’ll know”. The implication was clear; this UHNW event is likely to be anything but a private, intimate exchange of vows, but rather one for which nothing is deemed too much, too expensive or too over-the-top.
The allure of couture
Of course, not every wealthy couple is (or wants to be) anything like Taylor Swift or Jeff Bezos, whose destination wedding was split between a $500 million megayacht, exclusive locations on the Amalfi coast and apparently half of the city of Venice. However, while UHNW individuals are renowned for valuing discretion and privacy, there’s plenty to suggest that many ultra-rich couples who live outside of the public gaze are making audacious exceptions when it comes to making their big day one to remember.
So what does an UHNW wedding look like in 2025 and beyond? The fact that there’s no clear-cut answer to this question is possibly key to understanding the primary trends driving the contemporary luxury wedding industry. Opulence in 2025 is all about absolute personalization and the utmost in bespoke service provision. Quite simply, UHNW weddings are those which – besides the absolute necessities of a ring exchange in front of a licensed celebrant – make every effort to be unlike any other, and crafted to reflect a distinct and tailored approach that’s unlikely to be replicated by anyone else.
In practice, this means fully embracing couture in all its myriad forms. The wedding industry has long maximized on the promise of personalizing pretty much anything one might desire – towering, multi-layered cakes shaped and flavored to your precise specifications, or vast floral displays reflecting your chosen color schemes – and yet the very affluent are able to explore this avenue to its fullest potential.
Taking UHNW wedding celebrations to a whole new level
Perhaps the best examples of this in recent years can be found in the upper echelons of Indian high society, where weddings have always been an excuse to pull out every imaginable stop in the pursuit of the extravagant. The Ambani family – India’s richest business dynasty – hosted perhaps the most lavish wedding of 2025, raising the bar for ultra-wealthy nuptial celebrations worldwide, and demonstrating how one can tailor every imaginable detail of a private event to exceed even the highest of expectations.
Following months of opulent warm-up celebrations, the wedding of Anant Ambani and pharma heiress Radhika Merchant in July 2025 included a guest list featuring Bill Gates, two former British prime ministers, various members of the Kardashian clan and Bollywood A-listers such as Priyanka Chopra. Split over two days, it also boasted a full-length concert by pop star Rihanna – who came out of semi-retirement for an estimated fee of $9 million.
Haute couture formed a key aspect of the event; Radhika Merchant’s wedding dress was said to be the most expensive ever made (with an estimated value of at least $7 million), and the total cost of her jewelry for the day – a vital aspect of any Indian wedding – was estimated at around $50 million. What’s more, 500 florists were employed to decorate the 18.5 acre venue with millions upon millions of fresh flowers, and even the invitations – which were delivered in hand-made golden chests – each cost $8,600 to produce. The list, as you might expect, goes on and on, resulting in a level of opulence hitherto unimagined yet quite likely to be surpassed at some point in the not-so-distant future.
The other side of luxury weddings
As has become clear, for many UHNW couples the idea of a wedding is inextricably linked to notions of absolute extravagance and excess. The industry is seeing a considerable increase in multi-day, multi-location events at which the boundaries of possibility are being tested (and met by industry professionals keen to showcase what can be achieved for the right price).
But is there a flipside to these ostentatious displays of romance and wealth? It would seem the answer is a resounding ‘yes’ – for every record-breaking wedding of the century, there are more than a handful of UHNW couples opting for elegant elopements; private events which bring a more relaxed, intimate and discreet ideal of marriage to the fore.
It’s not hard to see the appeal. A luxurious elopement is much more than just an intimate wedding; it’s an opportunity to have all of the curated, tailored and bespoke features one might desire for a special day, but also the possibility of actually being able to enjoy the event as it unfolds. For many such couples, discretion and taste are still fundamental to their lifestyle – and with only a small coterie of guests in tow, the growing trend for high-end elopements allows for creativity and personalization that maintains both a sense of romance and sophistication, while surely demanding far fewer logistics and less stress.
Whether excessive and star-studded or intimate and utterly bespoke, one thing’s for certain: weddings of all sizes are becoming more expensive, more personalized and more globe-spanning in their nature. For luxury service professionals in the wedding industry, there’s more opportunity than ever before to flex the creative muscles and demonstrate versatility and vision, and the outer limits of what is expected – and what is achievable – continue to expand beyond all expectations. Who knows what new heights will be attained for the celebrations of Gen Z and Gen Alpha, when they start to come of age in a few short years? Only time will tell.
